# Setting Up a Kiosk Device

> Prepare a tablet as a storekit self-service kiosk: open your store's kiosk address, pair it with a claim code, lock it to the kiosk screen and stop it sleeping.

Pair the tablet with a kiosk you've created in the dashboard, then lock it so customers can only use the kiosk screen. This takes about ten minutes per tablet.

## Before You Start

* Create the kiosk under **Kiosks & Terminals**, and link its card terminal if you have one. See [Managing Kiosks and Payment Terminals →](/docs/guides/store-settings/kiosks-terminals).
* Put the tablet where it will stay, on Wi-Fi, with its charger plugged in.
* Find your store's URL slug: the part after `order.storekit.com/` in your store link. See [Store URL →](/docs/guides/store-settings/store-url).

## Pairing the Tablet

These steps are for a browser kiosk. If the tablet runs the storekit kiosk app, see [Using the storekit Kiosk App →](/docs/guides/kiosks/kiosk-app#pairing-the-app).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the kiosk address">
    In the tablet's web browser, open `https://kiosk.storekit.com/your-store-slug/kiosk`, replacing `your-store-slug` with your store's slug. A tablet that isn't paired yet shows the **Kiosk Setup** screen.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Generate a claim code">
    In the dashboard, go to **Stores** → your store → **Settings** → **Kiosks & Terminals**. Click **Pair device** on the kiosk's row — or open its **⋯** menu and choose **Generate claim code**. The code expires in 5 minutes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the code">
    On the tablet, type the code and tap **Register Kiosk**. The kiosk loads your store's homescreen.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Check>
  In the dashboard, the kiosk's badge changes from **Not paired** to **Online** once the tablet has connected.
</Check>

Generate one code at a time. Each new code replaces the previous unused one, so an older code shows **Invalid code — check and try again**.

## Locking the Tablet to the Kiosk

Lock the tablet so customers can't leave the kiosk screen. These are settings on the tablet itself, not in storekit.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="iPad">
    Turn on **Guided Access** in the iPad's **Settings** → **Accessibility** → **Guided Access**, and set a passcode. Open the kiosk, then triple-click the side or home button to start Guided Access. Triple-click again and enter the passcode to leave it.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Android">
    Turn on app pinning (also called screen pinning) in the tablet's security settings, then pin the browser while the kiosk is open. The menu names vary between manufacturers. Check your tablet maker's guide if you can't find it.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Keeping the Tablet Awake

A tablet that sleeps, or a battery saver that pauses the browser, stops the kiosk taking orders.

* Set auto-lock or screen timeout to **Never**. On an iPad that's **Settings** → **Display & Brightness** → **Auto-Lock**.
* Turn off battery saver or low-power mode.
* Keep the tablet on charge during opening hours.
