# Offering Packaging Items at Checkout

> Set up storekit packaging items such as cutlery, napkins and bags so customers can add or remove them at checkout, with per-item quantities and fulfilment rules.

Packaging items let customers tell you what to include with their order — cutlery, napkins, bags, sauces — without adding them to the menu. You choose whether each item is added by the customer or included by default, and how many they can take.

<Note>
  **Packaging** only appears in your store settings when the feature is enabled for your account. If you cannot see it, contact support.
</Note>

## Adding a Packaging Item

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Packaging settings">
    Go to **Stores** → your store → **Settings** → **Packaging**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add an item">
    Click **Add item** (or **Add first item** if the list is empty). The **Add Packaging Item** dialog opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Fill in the item">
    Complete the fields below, then click **Create**. Only **Name** is required.
  </Step>
</Steps>

| Field | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Name** | Shown to the customer at checkout, for example "Utensils". |
| **Description** | Optional short text shown next to the name. |
| **Inclusion Type** | **Opt-in (customer adds)** — off by default, the customer ticks it. **Opt-out (included by default)** — on by default, the customer can remove it. |
| **Default Quantity** | How many are selected when the item is on. Applies when the customer ticks an opt-in item and when an opt-out item is included by default. |
| **Max Quantity** | The most a customer can select. Set to 1 for a simple yes/no tick box. |
| **Fulfilment Methods** | Tick **Delivery**, **Pickup** or **In-store** to show the item only for those order types. Leave all unticked to show it for every method. |
| **Enabled** | Turn off to hide the item from checkout without deleting it. Disabled items show a **Disabled** badge in the list. |
| **POS Provider** and **POS ID** | Under **POS Mapping**. Optional identifiers that link the item to your POS. Toast stores fill these automatically when items are imported (see below). |

## What Customers See

Packaging items appear on the checkout page, filtered to the customer's fulfilment method:

* An item with **Max Quantity** of 1 is a tick box.
* An item with **Max Quantity** above 1 shows a **−** / **+** counter, starting at 0 (opt-in) or **Default Quantity** (opt-out).

When a store has at least one packaging item for the current fulfilment method, the packaging list replaces the standard cutlery question at checkout.

## Editing, Reordering and Deleting

* To edit an item, click the pencil icon on its row. The **Edit Packaging Item** dialog has the same fields as above; click **Save**.
* To change the order items appear in at checkout, drag a row by the handle on its left. The new order is saved immediately.
* To remove an item, click the bin icon on its row and confirm with **Delete**. Deleted items are removed from checkout immediately and cannot be restored — use **Enabled** instead if you may want it back.

## Toast Stores

If your store is connected to Toast, a **Sync from Toast** button appears next to **Add item**. Click it to import the packaging items configured in Toast; the imported items carry their Toast identifiers in **POS Mapping**. The same import is available as **Sync Packaging** on the [Toast menu sync](/docs/guides/integrations/pos/toast/menu-sync#packaging) page.

The customer's packaging choices are sent to Toast with the order. There is no packaging section on the order in the storekit dashboard, and packaging selections are not printed on storekit kitchen tickets or sent to other POS systems.
