Contactless payments are just ways of logging all your card details onto your phone and transmitting them at the point of sale. They don’t fundamentally reroute where the money goes.

Social network companies doing payments are most popular abroad – but we could well see them here soon. WhatsApp pay, for example, hasn’t reached the UK but is a really big deal in India. They’re generally more likely to be a kind of peer-to-peer system attached to a social account you’re familiar with.

These tend to be just like the social network companies bove – but these are apps and wallets designed exclusively for the movement of money between peers.
