Square

Square is a payment processor which comes with free basic POS software. The software is generic and equally suitable for merchants of all kinds. Compare with iZettle which has the same business model.

Pricing

On payment processing, Square charge a flat 1.75% on every transaction, with no contract. The POS software is free.

What makes it different from iZettle?

Truthfully, very little. We work more closely with iZettle – but we’re happy to talk you through the differences over the phone, or read our blog on the subject.

Compatibility

As it’s a payment processor, Square needs its own brand card reader. All the hardware listed here should work. The Square EPOS system is an app which can download onto an iPad, iPhone, or Android phone. If you’re just interested in payments, Square can integrate with lots of more sophisticated POS systems.

Service

Support is available 9-5 on weekdays.

Getting started

Square needs its own card reader to work properly but you can download the app for free. For a referral, email hello@storekit.com.

The right choice whether on location, in-store or both

Pros

Ease of use Speed of access to funds - Next working day POS management - Keep a track of funds, staff & cash (not just card sales) smart appearance - Looks great, as long as you like white sensible hardware cost - Start small with just a card reader & grow scalable options - Stand, scanner, receipt printer etc website integration - Get websales using Square which is cheaper than PayPal

Cons

Non if you judge Square by the opposition. You still have to afford a merchant commission but that's the reality of retail

Pros

Square is a nifty little system. Pros are; Transparent percentage of sales. Ease of use. Design. Speed of set up and service. Comparatively to other till systems we have used (revel, trad. Till) it is the best so far.

Cons

Nothing as yet - currently WiFi/ 4g dependant but an offline mode is coming in the future. Really recommend.

Square is a very versatile pos System because you can customise it to your business .

Pros

the best thing about Square is that it is very easy to change thing and add different products also I love that you get paid instantly with the card machine.

Cons

The thing I dislike about Square is that not all products are over in the UK yet so you are limited to what you can use.

Simple, convenient & modern!

Pros

The app is super simple to use and you set it up exactly how you want (catergories etc) it’s sleek design is a real talking point amongst our customers as it’s not widely used in the UK yet. Next day bank deposit is really convenient (they also offer deposit instantly for a small fee but I have yet to need to use this)

Cons

My only downfall is that Friday, Saturday and Sunday takings don’t go in until Monday evening. But it’s never caused me too much trouble.

Very user friendly and smart look

Pros

easy to use, good reports, smart look , quite and easy to connect to other devices like printers has ability to be split between different locations and functions

Cons

unable to make few changes to VAT when cloths are vatable or un-vatable when you purchase is only base on one user so when setting up in different locations you need to add more employees and pay monthly for them

When it works it is works it is excellent but can be frustratingly clunky.

Pros

No monthly fees, reasonable commission percentage, relatively simple for multiple users to grasp quickly. Good customer service, have never been kept waiting for a response.

Cons

Square was obviously designed for traders on the move. The system is not so good for fixed point of sale set ups due to clunky integration. Bluetooth LE is a pain in the butt. The various elements should be hard wired.

easy

Pros

The point of sale reader looks like an apple product, which made me feel at ease as soon as I opened the box, it felt easy to use and easy to install. I also like the simple features nothing difficult to just straight forward instructions and integration. I like the fact that it integrated with word press for free so that it can update my stock on the move at the pop-up events. It all seems very seamless

Cons

The button for the reader is small but I like the overall design. It would be good if it came with the holder and charger as one complete unit...I dont really have any negatives at the moment as I am just starting to use it. It would have been better if it would integrate with cheaper Bluetooth scanners without having to go into the search section to scan with an unsupported scanner.

Perfect for food business

Pros

Has fast payouts & fantastic free software. Can run a multi-station restaurant/food truck all from the ipads. With the categories orders are sent to different printers as required. Also great compatabulity with external software and hardware.

Cons

No keypad on the reader, means that you need to be able to share your device with customers for non contactless payments.

does what you would expect, everything is where it should be

Pros

the ease of use for my staff on the storefront app. the money is deposited at 4pm the next working day, other companies I have used have taken 3-4 days and cost a higher percentage. I have invested in the square stands and they are excellent if a little pricey but it all looks professional, and the build quality of all the kit is better than the others that I previously used. Lots of people like the pin on glass entry which i thought might be a bit of a gimmick but its all good.

Cons

the only thing i would say is there is no counter display for the customer in any form. Not a big issue as my staff just tell them the amount before they tap. This is available to US customers but no dates or plans for UK roll out. Would be a nice addition but not a deal breaker

Phenomenal Software, Support, and Results

Pros

Square POS is the easiest point of sale software I've ever used. It transformed our front desk experience for both our staff and guests.

Cons

The only downside has been that Square does not currently track commissions for staff at our salon. If it had this feature, it would be our all-in-one solution.

I have mixed feelings. I like the look/feel of the old app better. It seemed more user friendly.

Pros

I like the ability to transfer inventory from one store to another. I like the ability to have employees clock-in/clock-out to keep track of pay and what items a specific employee sells. I like the ability to adjust quantities from the app instead of just the dashboard.

Cons

I don't like that I can't view another store's inventory from the app. Very often, I find myself saying, "We don't have that in-stock here, but I know it's in-stock at our other location." It'd be very helpful to be able to type in an item and view quantity in-stock for all locations. I also HATE that there are not "tickets" available anymore. I own a music store that offers instrument repairs and we also have special orders. For instrument repairs - the amount is variable depending on what needs done and I also notate the transaction with the instrument type, brand, serial number - what parts were used, and what was done under the "Quantity and Notes" section. I don't want to have to look up that information and type into a transaction with the customer standing at the register. In the other app, I could do all of that when no one was in the store and save it as a ticket. Then when they come into the store, all I had to do was pull up the ticket and they were good to go. Same with special orders. I don't want to add inventory into Square, assign it a price, add the SKU, put it into a category, set the quantity, etc., if I'm not going to STOCK the item. So for special orders, I like to just type in the information under "Custom Amount," but I do like to notate the transaction under "Quantity and Notes" with the title and SKU so I can look back and see what it was. I don't want to do that typing when a customer arrives, so I prefer to save it as a ticket. Now I can't do that.
