Square

Square is a payment processor which comes with free basic POS software. The software is generic and equally suitable for merchants of all kinds. Square also has a vertical-specific POS for restaurants called Square for Restaurants). Compare with iZettle which has the same business model.

Pricing

On payment processing, Square charge a flat 1.75% on every transaction, with no contract. The POS software is free.

What makes it different from iZettle?

Truthfully, very little. We work more closely with iZettle – but either choice is great if you’re looking for a simple system. If you’re looking for a vertical-specific POS app, Square integrates with a number at partners.

Compatibility

As it’s a payment processor, you can you Square Reader, Square Stand, or Square Terminal. All the hardware listed here should work. The Square EPOS system is an app which can download onto an iPad, iPhone, or Android phone. If you’re just interested in payments, Square can integrate with lots of other vertical-specific POS systems.

Service

Support is available 9-5 on weekdays. If you use Square for Restaurants or Square Terminal, 24/7 support is included.

Getting started

Square needs its own hardware to work properly but you can download the app for free. For a referral, email hello@storekit.com.

Excellent customer support and fast delivery of items.

Pros

Square Terminal offers simplicity and a streamlined system of processing all forms of payment at our premises. The fact that this is a mobile system suits our business well, as we are a service provider and often take payments off premises. The online dashboard is easy to use and makes it very simple to find and view our reports.

Cons

I would like to see a dedicated USB cash drawer available on the website to avoid the need for an additional receipt printer when the terminal already has one built in.

Easy to deal with initially & equipment easy to set up - so far so good!

Pros

Cheap to run - no on going running costs just a transaction percentage - no minimum charge per month as with usual banks & card processing facilities. Easy to use app & portable device.

Cons

No immediate paper or printed receipt feature as standard - an additional printer is required to get a similar set up to what we used to have.

Square is an absolutely great system for new start ups, pop up kitchens etc

Pros

Easy to use and quick set up, fast payments, I like the design of the app and was surprised how easy it was to get up and running. A great way for small businesses like myself to get set up without too much hassle.

Cons

I wish there was a section for open orders and completed for use for kitchen dockets to be sinced up to an iPad

I can’t think why any shop wouldn’t use Square.

Pros

I started using Square in my coffee shop when my Chip & Pin machine broke down and the service provider couldn’t fix it remotely. Square was super simple to set up and the Square Terminal is stylish and very streamlined. Customers love it! The user interface is intuitive and the items easy to set up. It’s a piece of cake to check your sales, and Square pays without fail next working day. Best of all, there are no monthly fees, and the commission rate is fair. My next step is to integrate Square into my website so that I can sell online. Overall, I can’t think of a good reason why anyone in my business wouldn’t use Square.

Cons

The back reports are not as detailed as my previous EPOS system, and there is no option to input the cost of items to work out GP. It’s a little bit clunky to have to swivel the iPad on the screen so that customers can input their PIN and check sales prices.

Best POS!!

Pros

Great value and very on trend! Customers always say how professional and modern my set up looks. Everything is simple to use and has the quickest set up of all pos systems I’ve used.

Cons

After spending a fortune on hardware, I wish the transaction fee was just a TINY bit lower. It’s still fantastic though, and I don’t think I’ll ever change!

Pros

30% sale increase and ease. It also has no fixed fees what is refreshing, especially for a seasonal business. Square also provides great insights such as graphs

Pros

Square is so easy to use. Customers compliment its ease of use and staff find it easy too. Payments to our bank are quick and painless and the percentage take is at a reasonable level.

Cons

Cons

Pros

The app is super simple to use and you set it up exactly how you want (catergories etc) it’s sleek design is a real talking point amongst our customers as it’s not widely used in the UK yet. Next day bank deposit is really convenient (they also offer deposit instantly for a small fee but I have yet to need to use this)

Cons

Pros

No monthly fees, reasonable commission percentage, relatively simple for multiple users to grasp quickly. Good customer service, have never been kept waiting for a response.

Cons

Square was obviously designed for traders on the move. The system is not so good for fixed point of sale set ups due to clunky integration. Bluetooth LE is a pain in the butt. The various elements should be hard wired.

Pros

The point of sale reader looks like an apple product, which made me feel at ease as soon as I opened the box, it felt easy to use and easy to install. I also like the simple features nothing difficult to just straight forward instructions and integration. I like the fact that it integrated with word press for free so that it can update my stock on the move at the pop-up events. It all seems very seamless

Cons

The button for the reader is small but I like the overall design. It would be good if it came with the holder and charger as one complete unit...I dont really have any negatives at the moment as I am just starting to use it. It would have been better if it would integrate with cheaper Bluetooth scanners without having to go into the search section to scan with an unsupported scanner.

does what you would expect, everything is where it should be

Pros

the ease of use for my staff on the storefront app. the money is deposited at 4pm the next working day, other companies I have used have taken 3-4 days and cost a higher percentage. I have invested in the square stands and they are excellent if a little pricey but it all looks professional, and the build quality of all the kit is better than the others that I previously used. Lots of people like the pin on glass entry which i thought might be a bit of a gimmick but its all good.

Cons

the only thing i would say is there is no counter display for the customer in any form. Not a big issue as my staff just tell them the amount before they tap. This is available to US customers but no dates or plans for UK roll out. Would be a nice addition but not a deal breaker

I have mixed feelings. I like the look/feel of the old app better. It seemed more user friendly.

Pros

I like the ability to transfer inventory from one store to another. I like the ability to have employees clock-in/clock-out to keep track of pay and what items a specific employee sells. I like the ability to adjust quantities from the app instead of just the dashboard.

Cons

I don't like that I can't view another store's inventory from the app. Very often, I find myself saying, "We don't have that in-stock here, but I know it's in-stock at our other location." It'd be very helpful to be able to type in an item and view quantity in-stock for all locations. I also HATE that there are not "tickets" available anymore. I own a music store that offers instrument repairs and we also have special orders. For instrument repairs - the amount is variable depending on what needs done and I also notate the transaction with the instrument type, brand, serial number - what parts were used, and what was done under the "Quantity and Notes" section. I don't want to have to look up that information and type into a transaction with the customer standing at the register. In the other app, I could do all of that when no one was in the store and save it as a ticket. Then when they come into the store, all I had to do was pull up the ticket and they were good to go. Same with special orders. I don't want to add inventory into Square, assign it a price, add the SKU, put it into a category, set the quantity, etc., if I'm not going to STOCK the item. So for special orders, I like to just type in the information under "Custom Amount," but I do like to notate the transaction under "Quantity and Notes" with the title and SKU so I can look back and see what it was. I don't want to do that typing when a customer arrives, so I prefer to save it as a ticket. Now I can't do that.

Love Square! I've been using it a year and am very happy with everything!

Pros

I love the integration with Big Commerce so I can easily sell online and in store with inventory syncs immediately. We do a lot of volume so the immediate inventory sync is very important to us or we would oversell items.

Cons

The retail app needs some work but I understand they need more time to update the software. Once the bugs get worked out, I would love to have a complete retail POS solution. In my mind it would include, physical inventory counts using scanners for tons of inventory -preferable to have multiple people doing different parts of the store at the same time. Included in retail should be a report for the inventory status/financial which would include total count, total cost, and total retail price of the entire store/warehouse. Also, a better integration for Quickbooks online. I'm scared to add this integration because it gets horrible reviews.
