Overview

Aimed at small & micro businesses, Square offers an easy way for merchants to start taking card payments. Their simple POS app can run on iOS or Android and is free to use making it a good first step for new businesses. The app is actually fairly comprehensive for a free system, with the option to add extra premium features through a marketplace.

Square’s intuitive card machine integrates directly with the app, and has the facility for contactless, apple pay and chip & pin transactions. The card machine itself doesn’t have a keypad, so the pin is entered directly onto the screen of the phone or tablet being used with the system. If you take payments remotely, Square offers a virtual terminal enabling you to take card payments via invoice or over the phone.

Square offers phone support 9-5 Monday-Friday as well as a comprehensive library of support guides.

    Cons

SOMETIMES IT FREEZES WHEN WE DO NOT WANT IT TO. WE HAVE TO REBOOT AND THE SYSTEM IS FINE. THIS HAS ONLY OCCURED A COUPLE OF TIMES AND HAS NOT OCCURED ANY MORE

  • The perfect mobile POS product for mobile locations.

    Square reviewed by Barry B

    Pros

This software has allowed us to easily and affordably conduct mobile fundraisers and retail sales. The cloud based software allows for a remote administrator to set up the software for use by multiple employees in multiple locations to conduct sales and fundraising. This software has saved our non-profit thousands of dollars in labor costs and travel expenses.

    Cons

The Square Software can be difficult to merge with an established Quickbooks stand alone accounting system.

  • So far, so good. Could use a few more features for the premium price.

    Pros

Square is undoubtedly the easiest program to use and learn. Partly because of it's streamlined system, and partly because of it's minimal features.

    Cons

For $60 monthly, there aren't enough exclusive features for the premium price. Namely, a lack of cost of goods reporting/editing features.

  • Love Square! I've been using it a year and am very happy with everything!

    Pros

I love the integration with Big Commerce so I can easily sell online and in store with inventory syncs immediately. We do a lot of volume so the immediate inventory sync is very important to us or we would oversell items.

    Cons

The retail app needs some work but I understand they need more time to update the software. Once the bugs get worked out, I would love to have a complete retail POS solution. In my mind it would include, physical inventory counts using scanners for tons of inventory -preferable to have multiple people doing different parts of the store at the same time. Included in retail should be a report for the inventory status/financial which would include total count, total cost, and total retail price of the entire store/warehouse. Also, a better integration for Quickbooks online. I'm scared to add this integration because it gets horrible reviews.

  • Needs polishing

    Pros

The clean display as items are rung up, the favorites aren't on the front screen, and being able to search everything from the front landing page

    Cons

No pictures show on products, Item and Inventory Management being different pages on the back end (needs consolidating), and lack of gift card options

  • Great product that is very easy to use.

    Pros

So easy to use and set up. There are several options in setting up retail items. Really enjoy working with it and like all of the reporting functions.

    Cons

The system lacks the ability (currently) to accept customer deposits. This is a feature that needs to be quickly added. Would also like the ability to "drill down" into some of the reports.

  • I have mixed feelings. I like the look/feel of the old app better. It seemed more user friendly.

    Square reviewed by Nate N

    Pros

I like the ability to transfer inventory from one store to another. I like the ability to have employees clock-in/clock-out to keep track of pay and what items a specific employee sells. I like the ability to adjust quantities from the app instead of just the dashboard.

    Cons

I don't like that I can't view another store's inventory from the app. Very often, I find myself saying, "We don't have that in-stock here, but I know it's in-stock at our other location." It'd be very helpful to be able to type in an item and view quantity in-stock for all locations. I also HATE that there are not "tickets" available anymore. I own a music store that offers instrument repairs and we also have special orders. For instrument repairs - the amount is variable depending on what needs done and I also notate the transaction with the instrument type, brand, serial number - what parts were used, and what was done under the "Quantity and Notes" section. I don't want to have to look up that information and type into a transaction with the customer standing at the register. In the other app, I could do all of that when no one was in the store and save it as a ticket. Then when they come into the store, all I had to do was pull up the ticket and they were good to go. Same with special orders. I don't want to add inventory into Square, assign it a price, add the SKU, put it into a category, set the quantity, etc., if I'm not going to STOCK the item. So for special orders, I like to just type in the information under "Custom Amount," but I do like to notate the transaction under "Quantity and Notes" with the title and SKU so I can look back and see what it was. I don't want to do that typing when a customer arrives, so I prefer to save it as a ticket. Now I can't do that.

  • Phenomenal Software, Support, and Results

    Square reviewed by Jacob J

    Pros

Square POS is the easiest point of sale software I've ever used. It transformed our front desk experience for both our staff and guests.

    Cons

The only downside has been that Square does not currently track commissions for staff at our salon. If it had this feature, it would be our all-in-one solution.

  • Very easy to use and great for my business!

    Square reviewed by Seth S

    Pros

Offline Mode for accepting credit cards Ability to email receipts Ability to create and send invoices. Clean interface and lots of customization. Fast transactions.

    Cons

No way to pay for invoices straight from phone. No way to print invoices. Debit cards not accepted. Cannot use the chip and contactless reader in Canada.
