SumUp

SumUp is a payment processor which comes with free POS software. This POS software is very basic so could be a great choice for a low-volume market stand wanting to log their sales. It is generic and equally suitable for merchants of all kinds. Compare with Square and iZettle which have the same business model.

Pricing

For payment processing, SumUp charge a flat 1.69% per purchase, with no contract. The POS software is free.

What makes it different from iZettle or Square?

For merchants with very low transaction volumes, SumUp can be very slightly cheaper. (call us to check whether this would be true for you). Square and iZettle, while still basic, probably have the better software.

Compatibility

SumUp needs a specific card reader to work, but the hardware displayed here is compatible. SumUp can integrate with some POS systems (such as Vend). It works via an app download, so you need iOS or Android devices to run the POS.

Service

Support is available 8-7 Monday-Friday and 9-5 on a Saturday.

Getting started

SumUp does not require a trial – but you need a card reader that works. It’s very quick to set up. For a referral, email team@storekit.com.

Easy on-boarding of card payment account and installation of hardware. Very good for start-ups.

Pros

One-stop-solution for card payments. Easy setup, easy to add products, your bank account is activated within hours, and ships the reader quickly. Also, it provides wide support from many third party hardware and application vendors. A very good solution for start-ups and on-the-go retailers/traders.

Cons

SumUp Support Team, copy and paste from help and never read or conceive the question of the customer! Need a lot of training.

Totally happy with it, works really well for our little business, and gives our customers the option of paying by card.

Great for Transporting

Pros

I do a lot of market stalls so SumUp is great for this as it is easily portable, before SumUp I wasn't able to take any payments other than cash at my stalls, so to say it has transformed my business is an understatement! The 3G one is great as when im at Markets I don't always have wifi

Cons

Would be great if it had a locator/ beep finder as sometimes I misplace is when travelling around from market to market

Fantastic Deviece

Pros

SumUp is a necessity if you run a shop, takeaway or restaurant. It's portable, easy to set up & the battery is long-lasting meaning you don't have to worry about it running out.

Cons

My only issue with sumup is the app, which can take a long time to set up if you have a lot of items that you sell, however once you've set it up - you're good to go

Value for money. Low transaction fees. Money received quickly

Pros

Cheap card reader. Value for money. Low transaction fees. Money received quickly after receiving funds. Good comms with customer service team. Card reader has buttons unlike square, which looks more trustworthy

Cons

Card reader is bulky and is not comfortable in the hands. It doesn't look like a standard card reader which puts some people off

Good affordable option

Pros

Easy to use, simple fees, adaptable pay outs. Great for any small business looking for straight forward system. Unfortunately don’t use recently so not as sure on updates

Cons

Often have to re-log in when device locks and it appears to cut off Bluetooth. Some competitors are cheaper on larger volume

A great little bit of kit

Pros

We use our sumup machine with the free point of sales software on an ipad. Sumup provided us with a stand, mpop AIO till drawer and an air card reader and it works out great for us selling sandwiches, merchandise and tickets. The software is simple and easy to configure and both our card machines (we have the 3g and the air) work great and look amazing.

Cons

The till software is a bit too barebones, although it is free so I can’t be too picky. The ability to scan barcodes and create product deals would make it a 10/10 for me!

Very easy to use, but there are limitations

Pros

It's extremely easy to use, you can add your products on the app as a catalogue so when you're charging a payment, it just adds it together as one transaction. The receipts given by email and SMS are nicely designed (especially the SMS ones). Sum up are always adding new features such as their card

Cons

There are limitations, previous transactions showing mode than one item don't reflect on what was bought - you only get a transaction id even if you add the items from the catalogue. The design is limited, as you can only get certain sum up products and the rest has to be obtained through a callback service (which has put me off)

Great little card reader

Pros

It's so simple to use, records our transactions and alerts us to any delays in payment. It has really helped modernise our business and they pay quickly.

Cons

No product names for multiple transactions. It would also be great to have some sort of inventory management

Pros

The speedy processing of transactions is extremely helpful whilst going about my business. The ease of use for the user and the customer and it’s slick design makes this unit a game changer.

Cons

The gratuities cannot be added by the customer on the unit. Customers constantly request to input their own gratuity.
