Square lets your guests redeem their Square gift cards when placing an order or paying a bill online. The integration connects at the account level and is then enabled per store, adding a gift card code input to the checkout flow.

Capabilities

Gift Card Redemption

Once enabled, guests can enter a Square gift card code at checkout with two redemption modes:

Supported Payment Scenarios

Order Payments

Apply gift cards during checkout for delivery, pickup, or dine-in orders

Bill Payments

Apply gift cards when paying a bill online at a pay-at-table store

Split Payments

When a gift card doesn’t cover the full amount:
  1. The gift card balance is applied first
  2. The remaining balance is charged to another payment method (card, Apple Pay, etc.)
This lets guests use gift cards of any value without needing an exact match.

Balance Enquiry

The card’s remaining balance is looked up in Square before redemption, so guests see the available balance when they apply their card. Checking the balance does not deduct anything.

Refunds

When an order paid with a Square gift card is refunded, the refunded amount is credited back to the original gift card. Partial refunds are supported. If an order fails after the gift card has been redeemed, storekit reverses the redemption automatically.
Square handles redemption only. Purchasing new gift cards and topping up existing cards are not supported through storekit.

How It Works

  1. Guest chooses Apply a gift card at checkout and enters their Square gift card code
  2. storekit looks up the card in Square and shows the available balance
  3. The guest clicks Apply and the required amount is deducted from the card
  4. Any remaining order total is charged to another payment method
  5. The order or bill is updated, and the redemption is recorded in your reports

What You’ll Need

Before connecting, make sure you have:
  • A Square account with gift cards enabled, and the login for it.
  • A Square location for each store you want to enable.
Square is a storekit+ integration. On a plan without storekit+, opening Square under Stores → your store → Settings → Integrations takes you to the upgrade page instead of the settings — contact support if you need it enabled. Only one gift card provider can be active per store.

Configuration

1. Connect your account

  1. Go to Stores → your store → Settings → Integrations and open Square
  2. Click Connect to Square
  3. Sign in to Square and approve the connection. You are returned to the Square Gift Cards page, which now shows Connected to Square
If the page shows an error such as “The connection request expired” or “Access was denied”, click Connect to Square again and approve the request.

2. Enable Square for a store

Once your account is connected, configure each store that should accept gift cards:
  1. Choose the store’s location in Square Location. If it says “No Square locations found for this account”, create the location in Square first
  2. Turn on Integration enabled for this venue
  3. Click Save Configuration
The gift card code input appears at checkout for that store as soon as it’s enabled. To stop accepting gift cards at a store, turn Integration enabled for this venue off.

Expired connections

If the status reads Connected to Square (connection expired), click Refresh Connection. If that fails, click Disconnect Account and connect again.
Disconnect Account removes the Square connection for your whole account and disables gift card redemption at every store that uses it.
